Microsoft is ending support for the Microsoft Teams Meeting LTI on September 15, 2025.  At this time, the tool will no longer work and will be removed from Canvas.

Microsoft Education Tool is a new unified platform that combines several Microsoft apps into one dashboard.  While it streamlines access, there are a few changes and limitations.  Here's a look at what's new and what to expect.

The following application integrations will be available in the Microsoft Education Tool:

Set up Microsoft Education in a Canvas Course

When accessing the Microsoft Education tool for the first time in your Canvas course, these are the following screens that you will step you through to complete its setup.

  • Click 'Continue setup'

  • Enable or disable the tools that are available using the slide switches.

If you disable any of these tools during the setup, you will not be able to enable them again.  Please reach out to ITS to have them re-enabled.

  • Once the process is complete, you will be presented with the following screen.

  • Click on any of the available tools to access them.

  • Quickly access another tool from the application icon.

OneDrive

Accessing OneDrive in this tool will function the same way as if you access your OneDrive location through the web.

If you would like to create a link to a file for your students, please follow these steps:

Modules

  1. Navigate to the module you would like a link added for a file.
  2. Select the + button at the top of the module.
  3. From the drop-down, select 'External Tool'.
  4. Select Microsoft Education from the app list.
  5. Click the link at the "Select OneDrive file".
  6. Select the file that you want to create a link.
  7. Edit any naming of this item for your Module and select "Add Item".

Page

  1. Edit a page.
  2. Place your cursor where you would like to link or embed your file.
  3. Select the App Icon or the Tools drop-down and select Apps-->View All.
  4. Select the Microsoft Education tool.
  5. Select the file you want to link/embed and click the respective option: Embed / Link.

Once these links are created, you can access the file directly from the link or embed it to make any changes to the file.  This feature creates a copy of your OneDrive file and makes it available in the course.

**Please NOTE that after 3  years, these links may break and be unusable in the future, as we only keep 3 years of data in Canvas per our policy.

OneNote - Class Notebook

As an instructor, you may create a OneNote Class notebook.  This will allow a personal workspace for every student, a content library for handouts, and a collaboration space for lessons and creative activities.

Accessing a created Class Notebook from your Canvas course will open a new tab with the created space.

Microsoft Teams Meeting

This application has the same function with some revisions and items that are still in development.

Creating a meeting using the tool for your class works the same as before.  However, there is a new feature that will allow you to create a meeting without having to invite anyone:

You may still add the entire class if you wish, but with this new option, you will not have to invite anyone if it is not necessary.  This can help with creating office hours for a class to setting up a work session.

The following features are still not in the application, but Microsoft stated that they are working on them:

  • The Edit meeting button is currently missing.
  • Add to Teams Class Channel is missing
  • Recording Tab and recording availability are missing.
    • Recordings are still available as they always have been, in your OneDrive/Recordings folder.
  • All previously created meetings will not be affected.  However, they will not show in the new application.
