Using pools of questions in Blackboard is a great way to create tests/quizzes from a wider range of questions at one time. These questions could be pulled from previous test/quizzes that have been used before or even be created from an external source like a book publisher. Follow the instructions below to import and how to use those pools of questions:

Import a Pool of Questions (from book publisher)

  1. Download the question pool file from your book publisher. This is normally a .zip file.
  2. Log into Blackboard and navigate to your class.
  3. Under the Course Management section, select Course Tools and click on Test, Surveys, and Pools.
  4. Select Pools on the right pane, and click the Import Pool button at the top.
  5. Browse and select the correct .zip file that has the pool of questions and select Submit.
  6. Once imported, you will see an import status screen. Select Ok in the bottom right to then be taken back to the question pool list screen.
  7. Now you will see the name of the question pool, the amount of questions, and the date last edited.

Build a Question Pool

  1. Log into Blackboard and navigate to your class.
  2. Under the Course Management section, select Course Tools and click on Test, Surveys, and Pools.
  3. Click on the Build Pool button at the top, name the pool and a description, then select Submit.
  4. You will be presented with a similar view as if you were creating a test.
  5. Here you may either create questions or import questions from a previous test, quiz or pool.
  6. If you want to import questions from other tests or quizzes, select the Find Questions button at the top.
  7. The Find Questions window will open to where you search for other test/quiz or pool criteria for questions to be selected.
  8. Once the criteria is selected, the available questions to choose from will populate on the right pane of the window.
  9. Select the questions that are needed and click Submit.
  10. If you select questions then navigate to another page of questions, the first selections are still checked for submission.
  11. Once submitted, the list of questions will show in your pool with point values for each question.

Creating Random Set of Questions from a Pool

  1. Create a test.
  2. At the top of the test, click Reuse Question and select one of the 3 options,
    • Create Question Set - groups of questions that can be presented in a random fashion.
    • Create Random Block - is a group of questions from a question pool.
    • Find Questions - questions are individually selected to be added to an assessment.
  3. A questions criteria screen will open to where you have to select which pool/test you would like to pull questions from as well as what type of questions (multiple choice, True/False, etc.)
  4. Once questions or blocks of questions are selected, click submit.
  5. These questions will not be pulled into your test to where you can edit the point value and how many questions to be chosen randomly if a Random Block was selected.
